Retirement Segment

  • Dave is the creator of RetireFabulously
  • Dave’s first book is Design Your Dream Retirement.
  • His latest book (Dec 2017) is Smooth Sailing into Retirement: How to Navigate the Transition from Work to Leisure.
    1. It covers the 6 months prior to retiring and into the first year of retirement.
    2. It guides us through the changes that you’ll experience.
  • You can find out more about Dave’s books, including how to purchase them, on his website.
  • We get into his chapter about Curating Your Retirement which is analogous to how a museum curator selects what to display from the entire collection.
  • A great quote: “The self is not something one finds but one something creates”.
  • Like the museum curator we need to design our day.
  • Retirement is one of life’s top 10 stressful events. It creates disruption.
  • When you retire you confront a lot of changes at once.
    1. Time
    2. Cash flow
    3. Relationships
    4. Moving
    5. Social interaction
  • A lot of identity and purpose is wrapped up in a job. You can read about my experience in My Identity Crisis.
  • It’s better to say I’m something new instead of a former or retired something.
  • Dave identifies 8 retirement personality types:
    1. Perpetual worker
    2. Volunteer
    3. Doting grandparent
    4. Traveler
    5. Fun seeker
    6. Self actualizer
    7. Lifelong learner
    8. Decelerator
  • Dave plans for 2019 to be his year of no commitments as he is very busy and wants to see what emerges especially regarding travel and writing.
  • Designing you day includes what you want to let go of as well as what you want to add.
  • How you live each day is how you live your retirement.
